Country Waffle - Restaurant Review

A Family Style Cafe - Centrally located

The Country Waffle restaurant located at 2300 Athens Avenue, Redding, California is located just off of Cypress Ave not far from Redding City Hall. They are open 7 days per week from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM. They serve breakfast and lunch.

This locally owned and operated restaurant has been at this location for several years and it is well known and loved for their hearty breakfasts. As you might guess from their name, they specialize in waffles that come in all forms: from plain to smothered in fried chicken.

The restaurant boasts an extensive breakfast menu with a number of different standout offerings. Their "Chicken and Waffles" are a big hit as is their chicken fried steak. On this particular day, my wife and I stopped in for a light lunch. The place was busy, with many guests enjoying a hearty breakfast. We kept it simple with:

  • A turkey melt sandwich with avocado and bacon (served on gluten free sourdough bread) and a side of potato salad.

  • A croissant bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwich with a side of french fries.

  • A cup of their vegetable soup.

Food Review

Flavor, Quality, and Freshness

The soup was quickly delivered and it is clearly made fresh in the restaurant. The flavor was good and my serving had an ample amount of vegetables and beef. My only issue was that the vegetables could have been cut a bit smaller. The Croissant BLTA was tasty, with a good helping of bacon and avocado. I prefer my bacon cooked a bit more crisply, but it was good. The fries are nothing special, prepared from frozen and could have been cooked a little longer for a bit more crispness and flavor. My wife's Turkey Melt was very good, she gave it "extra points" since they were able to serve it on gluten free bread. The potato salad was acceptable. Pictured above is their Chicken and Waffles - I regret not ordering this - it looked delicious.

Value

The prices are pretty average for a smaller family restaurant of this type located in this part of town. A bit more on the affordable side. Our meal of two sandwiches, sides of fries and potato salad, a cup of soup and beverages came to $37 before tip.

Overall Rating

We'd give Country Waffle a rating of 3.75 out of 5. It probably would have scored better if we had stuck with some of their popular breakfast offerings. We still recommend it, but I would eagerly go back for their breakfast.
